Smoke tree

Wyatt and Stanzie's mom, who can identify any plant you throw at her, told me this tree in the front yard is called a smoke tree (Cotinus). Some years the leaves are brighter than other years, depending on the weather; but one thing I can always count on is a multitude of shades on the one tree.
This tree branches out in all sorts of directions instead of growing up like a regular tree. Come to think of it, I have several trees in my yard that grow in individual, undisciplined ways.

I'm afraid I just gravitate toward that sort of thing.

Sorry Alanis can't have the elk antler...bc they really work. I guess you'll have to tie her down to brush.....bummer.

  4. Oooooo, that's a pretty one! They keep coming out with new varieties too. My current favorites are Cotinus 'Grace' and Cotinus 'Summerwine'.

  5. That is a really cool tree. Undisciplined or not.bol. Mommy likes the ones with red leaves best! There's a gorgeous, huge Ohio buckeye tree in this guys yard in Naples, that just drives her nuts it's so pretty. The old fellow refuses to give anyone seeds from it...how mean is that?

  9. We love smoke trees! There are some at Innisfree Garden (in New York), which is about 45 minutes away from us. We always love going there, and the smoke trees are one of our favorite things to see in the whole place. :)
